There is a version of Hobe Sound that shows up in guidebooks. Beach access, a nature refuge, the drive to Jupiter Island. Then there is the version that runs from June through September, when the season crowd is gone and the town's calendar tightens into something only residents seem to notice.
August is that calendar at full volume. The best things happening this month are not tourist-facing at all. They are on Bridge Road, on Federal Highway, and inside a 70-year-old building that just changed hands.
The Catfish House Building Has a New Name
The building at 11500 SE Federal Hwy sat quiet for stretches after the previous owner retired in 2023. This year it reopened as the Salty Pelican Fish Shack, taking over a 70-year-old building that was previously home to the iconic Catfish House, remodeled by the new owners known as the "Salty Sisters" with a bright seaside vibe while keeping some of the Catfish House's most popular menu items, like the bone-in "little ones" catfish.
For anyone who ate at the Catfish House with any regularity, the shorthand matters: the room is different, the fryer is still honest. The restaurant serves seafood dishes and daily specials, and features live music on the covered outdoor patio during special events. Current hours run Thursday through Sunday, with the kitchen closed the first three days of the week, so the Sunday afternoon slot is where the crowd concentrates. One event to put on the calendar: Salty Dawgs Solo returns to Salty Pelican Fish Shack on Sunday, August 23 at 1:00 PM, which stacks a live-music afternoon onto the patio's busiest day of the week.
Bridge Road After Dark
The center of gravity for resident summer, though, is not on Federal. It is a mile inland at Hobe Sound Farms, 1425 SE Bridge Rd. The farmers market is the daytime face of the property. August is when the property's evening programming takes over.
Two nights to know:
- Friday, July 31, 6:00 to 10:00 PM — 'Merica…Farm Yeah! An outdoor concert night with live entertainment by the Tom Jackson Band, a full bar, local food trucks, vendor activations, and mechanical bull rides. Admission runs $10 to $15. This is the last night of July but it is the event that sets the tone for the whole month that follows.
- Saturday, August 15, 6:00 PM — Line Dancing at Hobe Sound Farms. Part of a recurring series that runs Saturday June 13th, August 15th and October 17th from 6pm to 11pm, with country western line dancing lessons by Country Heart Dance Company and DJ John Lindz. Beginner-friendly if you show up for the early lesson block.
If you have kids, the daytime hook is Farm Explorer Wednesdays, running every Wednesday this summer at Hobe Sound Farms with animals, crafts, and outdoor activities. It is the reliable midweek pressure valve for families that have run out of pool time by 10 AM.
A Federal Highway Standby Turns Into a Dance Floor
Harry and the Natives has been the Federal Highway sight gag for decades. In August it becomes something else for a night. CHEMISTRY Rocks Awesome 80s Dance Night at Harry and the Natives is happening on Saturday, August 1 from 6:00 PM onwards.
If your only frame of reference for Harry's is the breakfast rush or a burger on the porch after the beach, an 80s cover band inside the same room is the kind of local plot twist that rewards showing up.
Where Locals Move on a Saturday Morning
August heat is real. The routines that survive it are the ones that finish before 11 AM or start after sunset.
Saturday, July 18, 11:00 AM — Saturday Sculpt at Sound Brewing. Saturday Sculpt at Sound Brewing Company in Hobe Sound is a fitness class at a working brewery, which is either exactly your thing or a hard no. Locals seem to have made their peace with it.
Fridays, 2:00 PM — Guided Nature Walks at Jonathan Dickinson State Park. Guided Nature Walks run Friday afternoons at 16450 SE Federal Highway. The 2 PM start time is unforgiving in August, but the walks stay in shade on the pine flatwoods loops and are led by park staff who actually answer questions.
Saturday, July 11, 10:00 AM — Nature Explorers. Nature Explorers is happening on Saturday, July 11 from 10:00 AM at 16450 SE Federal Highway. Family-oriented and short enough to still be back home before the afternoon storm cell moves in from the west.
The pattern here is not coincidence. Everything on the resident calendar is either early morning, air-conditioned, or after 6 PM. That is what August in Hobe Sound has always required. The town has just gotten better at scheduling around it.
The Fourth-of-July Anchor That Sets Up the Rest of the Month
Before August itself lands, one event acts as the community's summer opener. The Hobe Sound Community Fourth of July BBQ runs Saturday, July 4 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at 11933 SE Juno Crescent. If you are new to the neighborhood, this is the single easiest place to meet the people who will end up being your Bridge Road, farmers market, and Salty Pelican regulars all summer. Miss it and you spend August introducing yourself; go and you spend August waving.
The Restaurant Bench Behind Salty Pelican
One reason the Salty Pelican opening matters is that Hobe Sound's sit-down dining bench is short. As of June 12, 2026 there are four restaurants in Hobe Sound listed on OpenTable. Four. That is not a knock on the town, it is a description of how much weight each new opening carries when it happens.
The current lineup residents rotate through in August, on top of Salty Pelican:
- Citron Bistro, 11750 SE Dixie Hwy at Bridge Road, a New American-style menu with different types of food that are not too expensive, and indoor and outdoor dining.
- The Grove Cucina & Wine, a scratch kitchen with lamb bolognese, Tuscan-inspired pizzas, and First Friday jazz. The First Friday date this month is worth flagging in advance.
- Taylor Beach House Cafe, Chef Christopher and Elizabeth Taylor's newest dining experience in the vintage Florida village of Hobe Sound.
- Harry and the Natives for the porch, and the 80s dance floor on August 1.
That is your working bench. Rotate it and August feeds itself.
