Best Things to Do in Downtown Stuart This Summer

The tourist version of Stuart shuts down in July. The resident version does the opposite. Sunday afternoons on Flagler Park have quietly become the social spine of the summer, and this year the after-market crowd has somewhere new to drift toward on Federal Highway.

If you already live here, you know the rhythm. Farmers market from nine, a walk down the Riverwalk boardwalk toward Sunset Bay, live music on the Riverwalk Stage at one. What you may not have clocked yet is how the edges of that rhythm are shifting this summer.

The Sunday Rhythm At Flagler Park

The Rock'n Riverwalk series runs every Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on the Riverwalk Stage at 121 SW Flagler Avenue. It is free, it is outdoors, and it is where a good chunk of downtown ends up after the farmers market winds down at Flagler Park. Here is the July lineup as posted by Stuart Main Street:

Two things are worth flagging for anyone building a Sunday around this. First, the farmers market and the concert are stacked on the same block. Downtown Stuart's Farmers Market runs Sundays at 9:00 a.m. at Flagler Park, with Rock'n Riverwalk starting at 1:00 p.m. on the Riverwalk Stage the same afternoon. Second, the shade situation on the stage lawn is real by 2:00 p.m. Bring a low chair, park it near the boardwalk edge, and the breeze off the St. Lucie River does the rest.

There is also a Fourth of July layer this year that residents should plan around rather than stumble into. The City of Stuart 4th of July Golf Cart Parade steps off at 10:00 a.m. in Downtown Stuart, followed by R&B in the Park from 5–10 p.m. at 432 SE M.L.K. Jr Blvd, with the Andrew Morris Band playing an 8:00 p.m. set at The Pearl for a U.S.A. 250 Years show. If you live within walking distance of downtown, the golf cart parade is the tell that street parking is going to be gone by 9:30.

A New Kind Of Afternoon Stop On Federal Highway

The bigger structural change in the Stuart summer is not on Flagler. It is a mile and a half north on Federal Highway, at a concept that does not really have a parallel anywhere else in Martin County.

Baxter's Doghouse opened at 1240 NW Federal Highway, combining an off-leash dog park with a tiki bar, live music, food trucks, pickleball, and dog-focused services. Owner Dr. Michael Slobasky described it as a place where local dog owners can let their pets play while they relax.

Off-leash park. Tiki bar. Live music. Pickleball. Same address.

That combination is unusual enough that it changes what a Sunday afternoon can look like for a household with a dog. The standard Stuart move used to be either the concert on the Riverwalk or Halpatiokee for a run around, not both. A stop that hosts the dog and the adults at the same time is a genuinely new option, and it slots naturally into the window between the farmers market and dinner.

Whether it holds up as a repeat visit is a question the summer will answer. What matters for planning purposes is that it exists, it is open, and it is on the north side of the drawbridge, which means residents on the mainland side can get there without waiting on a bridge opening on the way home.

When The Sun Drops

The evening layer of downtown is easy to miss if you have not been out on a Friday or Saturday in a while. Three anchors are worth knowing about this summer:

• Terra Fermata. The outdoor music venue tucked off Osceola keeps a steady booking calendar through July. Wheeland Brothers play Terra Fermata on Saturday, July 18 at 6:00 p.m., with Kash'd Out and Kyle Smith on the summer schedule as well.
• The Lyric Theatre. The beautifully restored Lyric Theatre on the waterfront is the indoor counterweight to the outdoor stages, useful when an August thunderstorm rolls in at 4:00 p.m. and does not clear until eight.
• A.C.T. Studio Theatre. For a smaller-room evening, A.C.T. is running "Taming of the Shrew" on Friday, July 3 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, July 5 at 3:00 p.m.

The pattern here is that downtown Stuart's evening options are not concentrated on one street. They are spread across four or five walkable blocks, which is why the Riverwalk boardwalk that winds from Sunset Bay Marina to the historic homes of Seminole Street, past over 50 locally-owned shops, restaurants and galleries, is the connective tissue most residents underuse.

The Gallery Circuit Nobody Talks About

Ask ten Stuart residents what is on at the Palm Room Gallery in Harbour Bay Plaza this month and nine will not know. That is a shame, because the Martin Artisans Guild's "Summer Salon with Small²" is running through July with hours generally from noon to 6:00 p.m. at the gallery in Sewall's Point.

If you have not built the Palm Room into your rotation, the summer is the time to do it. The space is small enough to walk in ten minutes, the exhibitions rotate on a rhythm most residents never see, and it is a five-minute drive from downtown. Pair it with a weekday coffee at one of the Colorado Avenue cafes and you have an afternoon that does not exist in any tourist guide.

The wider Martin County cultural calendar is denser than most residents realize. On a random Wednesday in July, the Court House Cultural Center gallery has the Marvin S. Cone Annual High School Juried Art Show Alumni Exhibit open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with Music in the Gardens from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Neither of those shows up on the "what to do in Stuart" listicles, which is exactly why they are worth knowing.

One More Sunday, Then A Saturday

For anyone who cares about cars, or lives with someone who does, the last Saturday of the month is the one to circle. The Downtown Stuart Car & Bike Show runs Saturday, July 25 starting at 9:00 a.m. at the City Hall Annex parking lot. The June edition drew a display of cars, trucks, and motorcycles from 1985 and older filling the annex lot by mid-morning, and the July version follows the same format.

A tactical note. The annex lot fills first, but the overflow lands on the side streets between Flagler and Osceola. If you are walking to the show from a downtown address, come south along the Riverwalk boardwalk from Sunset Bay instead of cutting through the parking corridor. It is faster, shaded most of the way, and you end up on the right side of the show without threading between trailers.

Building The Rest Of Your Summer Around It

The through-line across all of this is that Stuart's summer is not passive. It has a shape, and the shape gets sharper the more of it you actually use. A representative resident Sunday looks something like this:

1. 9:00 a.m. Farmers market at Flagler Park.
2. 10:30 a.m. Walk the Riverwalk boardwalk to Sunset Bay and back.
3. Noon. Lunch at one of the Colorado Avenue spots or a waterfront table.
4. 1:00 p.m. Rock'n Riverwalk on the Riverwalk Stage.
5. 3:30 p.m. Detour to Baxter's on Federal Highway if the dog is in the car.
6. Evening. Terra Fermata, the Lyric, or a porch.
